Zirconium Crown
What is Zirconium?
Zirconium is a naturally occurring, white-colored element from the metal group. The form used in fixed dental prostheses is zirconium dioxide, which is highly resistant to pressure and tension. It is biocompatible and does not cause allergic reactions.
Zirconium crowns provide both aesthetic smiles and long-lasting results. However, healthy gums must be ensured before starting the procedure. When the gums are healthy, zirconium integrates well with them, preventing odor formation beneath the crown.
Features of Zirconium Crowns
- Natural-looking, not artificial, and highly durable
- Resistant to corrosion and oxidation
- Metal-free and long-lasting
- Semi-translucent: transmits light and blends well with natural teeth
- Doesn’t discolor and prevents plaque accumulation
- Unaffected by staining substances like coffee, tea, and cigarettes
- Can be used for many years with regular dental check-ups
Differences Between Zirconium and Metal-Supported Porcelain Crowns
The biggest advantage of zirconium crowns is their superior aesthetics. Unlike metal-supported porcelain crowns, they do not create gray or purple reflections. Their higher light transmission results in a much more natural appearance.
Contrary to popular belief, zirconium crowns are also suitable for use on molars due to their resistance to chewing forces.
Where Are Zirconium Crowns Used?
- Restoration of missing teeth in the aesthetic front area
- Treatment of crooked, discolored, or broken teeth
- Replacement of missing posterior teeth
- Crowns on top of dental implants
Stages of Zirconium Crown Treatment
After gum treatment is completed, an aesthetic evaluation is made. Teeth are prepared and impressions are taken using special materials. These impressions are sent to the laboratory, where digital design is created.
First, the zirconium substructure is tried in, followed by the porcelain superstructure. After final adjustments, the polished and smooth crowns are cemented onto the teeth. The entire treatment process takes approximately two weeks.
Maintenance of Zirconium Crowns
It should not be forgotten that zirconium crowns require regular care just like natural teeth. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, cleaned with special dental floss, and checked by a dentist every six months. With proper care, zirconium crowns can be used comfortably for many years.
