Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a field of practice aimed at restoring the health and aesthetics of the upper and lower jawbones, as well as the hard and soft tissues located on or within them.
Procedures within this scope include:
- Extraction of non-restorable teeth, roots, and any associated infected tissues
- Removal of impacted wisdom teeth (third molars)
- Removal of gum and bone abscesses, cysts, and tumors related to tooth roots or soft tissue origins
- Implant placements and site preparation procedures (e.g., bone grafts, sinus lift surgery)
- Apical resection surgeries to save teeth when root canal treatment has failed
- Collaborative treatments with orthodontists to bring impacted teeth into alignment
- Removal of enlarged soft tissues inside the mouth caused by irritation
- Preparing a suitable foundation for removable dentures
- Sinus treatments (such as sinus lift or closing of an open sinus)
- Aesthetic gum surgeries
