Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy is a highly effective procedure used to save teeth that have been damaged due to untreated enamel or dentin decay, or trauma. When the dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it must be removed to preserve the tooth.

During treatment, the decayed area is cleaned, the infected pulp tissue is removed, and the root canal is shaped and disinfected using specialized instruments and irrigation solutions. Once thoroughly cleaned, the canal is filled and sealed up to the tip of the root. The tooth’s natural appearance and function are restored with a composite filling or dental crown.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is the process of removing the small, thread-like pulp tissue located in the center of the tooth. If the pulp becomes damaged, infected, or dies, it is removed; the empty canal is then cleaned, shaped, and filled with a biocompatible material.

In the past, teeth with this type of damage often had to be extracted. Today, thanks to advanced endodontic techniques, most teeth can be saved with root canal treatment.

Common Causes of Pulp Damage

  • Cracked or fractured tooth
  • Deep decay reaching the pulp
  • Severe trauma or impact to the tooth (past or recent)

When the pulp becomes infected or dies and is left untreated, an abscess (pus accumulation) can form at the root tip, within the jawbone. This can cause:

  • Severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Bone loss around the root
  • Damage to surrounding tissues

Is Root Canal Treatment Successful?

Yes. Root canal therapy has a very high success rate when performed properly and followed up with good oral care. It allows patients to retain their natural teeth and avoid extraction, restoring both function and aesthetics.
